Genesis 3:15

Genesis 3:15

We will explain the definition of the key words involved in one of the most important prophecies given by God in His Word.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Who is involved in this passage? Let’s break it down:

-God: Who is the one that brought judgement upon every creature that is mentioned in the passage.

-The serpent: In the first part of the passage, it refer to enmity between the serpent the animal and men. The serpent the animal is directly involved in it. Verse 14 placed a direct curse upon it. The serpent the animal was the instrument that Satan used to deceived Eve.

-The woman: it represent “men” in the first part of it, then it made reference to the virgin, who will gives birth the the redeemer.

-Seed: “between thy seed and her seed”, it refers to the antagonism between the spiritual nature of those under a sinful nature and those that has been given God’s nature.

-The seed of the woman: Which is reference to the birth of Christ by a virgin. Isa. 7:14; 9:6-7. The word “seed” is connected to the way in which God placed the second person of the Godhead into Mary’s womb. Jesus needed to be born “sinless”, which mean that Jesus needed to be born with God’s blood.

-Satan: who is represented by the serpent in the last part of this passage.

Every Creature mentioned in Gen. 3:15 knew perfectly what meant each word expressed to them by God. Satan understood of the meaning “it shall bruise thy head”, but did not understood “God’s timing”, in which Satan’s defeat was predicted. Observe what Gal. 4:4 says about God’s timing:

“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made (born) of a woman, made (born) under the law.”

God perfect plan to rescue man and to restore them back to Him, will be executed in God’s perfect time. Every little detail was perfectly planned by The Godhead.

The issue that most people encounter is the biblical definition of each element involved in Gen. 3:15. Most people are not familiar with “The Law of double reference”, which is a tool that help us to comprehend certain passages. What is The Law of double reference? It is used when a “visible creature” is addressed in same passages but part of such passages are refer to “an invisible person”. The visible person or creature is use as an instrument to express details of the invisible person or creature; which mean that both are involved in the same passages. Once we separate both, we must use the law of Interpretation to comprehend what exactly it the principle or message that it is express by it. Any interpretation MUST harmonize with the context in which the doctrine, principle, divine truth or passage was written. For example: In Gen. 3:14 the sentence was directly to “the literal serpent or reptile”, and not to Satan. while the first part of verse 15 could be apply to both; the seed of the serpent and Satan, and the last part of it refers to “Christ and satan”. Same principle is used in Mat. 16:22-23, where Peter and satan are addressed. Also in Isa. 14:12-14 and Ezek. 28:11-17 in which the kings of Babylon and Tyre are refers to. The statements involved in such passages address particularly Satan’s creation and fall. In these passages are reference that could not be apply to an earthy person.

– Let’s breakdown the key words involved in Gen. 3:15; which is going to be extensive.

“And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

The Hebrew word used for “enmity” is “êybâh”, which is mean, “hostility, enmity, and hatred”. The hostility involved in this word is connected to man and snakes, which is natural enmity created on both. Also it applies to the hostility between those with God’s nature and those with Satan’s nature. Compare with Mat. 10:34-38; Jn. 8:44; 15:18-19; Jas. 4:4; 1 Pet. 4:12-19; 1 Jn. 2:15-17; 3:8-12; 4:1-6.

The Hebrew word used for “Seed” is “zera‛”, which mean;

1) seed, sowing, offspring

1a) a sowing

1b) seed

1c) semen virile

1d) offspring, descendants, posterity, children

1e) of moral quality

1e1) a practitioner of righteousness (figuratively)

1f) sowing time (by metonymy)

The expression “and between thy seed” used in reference to “the seed of Satan”, which mean, “anybody that have spiritual death as their nature”. Mat. 13:38; Jn. 8:44; 1 Jn. 3:8-10. The other part of the passage says, “and her seed”, which implied “The seed of the woman”; Not the seed of man. This is a reference to “the birth of The Son of God through Mary”. No other reference can be use other than that.

-Let’s review some other Scriptures that related to expression “Her Seed or Seed of the woman”.

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a VIRGIN shall CONCEIVE, and BEAR A SON, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isa. 7:14

The prophecy is very clear, it needed to be a “Virgin” who will “Conceive and bear” The Son of God. One thing must be clear; Mary DID NOT produce a divine son, but rather a human son. God became a “Father” the day Jesus was born, and Mary gave birth her first-born son when Jesus was born. Later Mary gave birth more children as it is stated in Mt. 12:46; Mk. 6:3; Lk. 8:10-21; Jn. 2:12. But Jesus was God’s only begotten Son as it is stated in Jn. 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 Jn. 4:9. The Greek word used for “Begotten” is “monogenēs”, which implied “unique in his class” when it is used related to Jesus. The Scriptures also state that Jesus was son of Mary and not of Joseph. Mat. 1:18-25; Lk. 1:30-35; Jn. 1:14, 18; 3:14-20; Heb. 1:1-2. The virgin birth of Jesus will cast out any argument about his conception and divinity. A lot of writers have mistakenly confused Jesus’s sonship with his deity, which is not supported by the Scriptures. But instead, Sonship is related to Jesus’s humanity. Let’s review some Scriptures about it:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

At what “beginning” is refer to in John 1:1? At the same “Beginning” of Gen. 1:1. Must people have trouble understanding the connection between Gen. 1:1 and John 1:1, which revealed “The plurality of the Godhead”, and also, expressed the function of the second person of the Godhead as “The Word”. Also John 1:2-3 confirmed his divine position:

“The same was in the BEGINNING WITH GOD. All things were MADE by HIM; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

Observe how in verse 2 use the expression “The same”, which is implying a “Person”. How we can proof this point? Because in Verse 3 connected “the same” with “by HIM”, which is statement of the divine existing of the plurality of the Godhead. The plurality of the Godhead is stated in many passages of the Scriptures. Gen. 1:26; 3:22; 11:7; Psalm 2:2; Isa. 61:1; Acts 10:38; 1 Jn. 5:7. Etc.

The same “Word” took a human body, which gave Him the title of “The Son of God”, after He was born. This point of clearly expressed in Gen. 3:15 as “The seed of the woman”. John expressed the same line of though:

“And the Word WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:14

This statement of John is connected with “the incarnation of the second person of the Godhead”, who become “Immanuel”, which mean, “God WITH US”. Compare with Mat. 1:23.

– More passages connected with Gen. 3:15:

“For unto us A CHILD IS BORN, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isa. 9:6

The expression “For into US” is a reference to Israel. Jn. 1:11; Rom. 9:4-13. The passage also expressed The ruling of The Messiah upon all the earth, some of the titles of the Messiah, and under the context of the whole chapter; how The Messiah will bring light upon the land of Israel. Isa. 9:2, 6-7; 11:1-2.

“ Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is TO BE RULER in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of OLD, from EVERLASTING.” Mic. 5:1-2

These passages expressed the 2 comings of The Messiah, who will ruler Israel for all eternity and all the nations as well. Also it stated “The Eternity of the divine person that was made flesh”.

“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.” Gal. 4:4

God, The Father, “Sent forth His Son”, to redeem mankind through His incantation. The expression “Made of a woman”, expressed to be “Born of a woman”, which is connected with the prophecy of Gen. 3:15. God DID NOT Become a God, but rather BECAME A MAN. For Jesus was tempted as man and NOT as God, for God CANNOT be TEMPTED WITH EVIL (Jas. 1:13), and Yet Jesus was TEMPTED, as we are tempted.

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb. 4:15

The birth of the seed of the woman and His redemptive sacrifice will guarantee to anyone that believes in Him, eternal life and complete restoration. John 1:12; 3:13-21; Acts 13:48; Rom. 5:21; 6:23; 1 Tim. 6:12, 19; Tit. 1:2; 3:7. Let’s review Gal. 4:4 again:

“But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.” Gal. 4:4

The expression “when the FULLNESS OF THE TIME was come” expressed in this passage revealed “the timing” of God’s plan to redeem man. Such timing is flawless and perfect in nature. Every word that is involved in each prophecy of God’s plan was executed in perfect harmony with God’s will.

“God SENT FORTH His Son”, which implied “Sent forth to fulfill what was written in the prophecies of Him” and in alignment with God’s timing.

“Made of a WOMAN”, which express “The birth of the seed of the woman”. By Jesus being born through a woman will give Him “The right to operate y lived in the earth”. Satan, the fallen angels and demons were NOT BORN in this earth, which made their ruling over men ILLEGITIMATE, therefore Satan is a Pseudo-Ruler. God gave the ruling of this earth to Adam, not to Satan. But The seed of the woman came to take back what Satan took illegitimate by deceiving Eve and putting pressure unto Adam to give it up.

“Made under the law.” The Law was “Perfect”, which NO MAN could completely obey it, because of their SINFUL NATURE. Jesus came to ABOLISHED THE LAW by FULFILLED IT. The Greek word used for “Fulfilled” implied “To put it down”.

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” Mat. 5:17

Once Jesus “Fulfilled” the Law given to Moses by God, which is expressed in The Old Testament, Jesus could establish a “New Covenant” through His own Blood. Heb. 10:9-18. Jesus abolished the Law upon the Cross:

“Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, NAILING IT to his cross;

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holiday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days.” Col. 2:14-16

What Jesus Nailed upon the cross according to Col. 2:14? The answer id in the same verse, which says; “the handwriting of ordinances”, which was expressed in the Law of Moses. The Greek word used for “ordinances” is “Dogma”, which mean; “Decrees”. The Law did not provide a way for the restoration of man, so God needed to introduce His “Grace”. The Law only provided “Cursed and Killed” of all men, because all broke the law and could not obey it faithfully. Rom. 8:3; Gal. 1:6; 3:5, 19; 2 Cor. 3:6. The ordinances or dogmas are directly connected with religious acts, which could not save anyone.

“And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

a virgin espoused (to be promised in marriage, be betrothed) to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women (she was fulfilling prophecy).

And when she saw (visibly) him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. (The fulfillment of Gen. 3:15 and Isa. 7:14; 9:6)

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and THE LORD GOD (The first person of the Godhead) shall give unto HIM (The second person of the Godhead) the throne of his father David:

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

And the angel answered and said unto her, THE HOLY GHOST (The third person of the Godhead) shall come upon thee, and THE POWER (Gr. Dunamis) of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which SHALL BE BORN OF THEE (reference to “the seed of the woman) shall be called the Son of God.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me ACCORDING TO THY WORD. And the angel departed from her.” Luke 1:26-38

The birth of Jesus needed to be through a “Virgin”, so that no one could question His right to be on this earth as a man. Also, that Jesus was God made flesh. Luke 1:26-38 is the precise and exact fulfillment of Gen. 3:15

Most theological books have mistakenly confused and mixed Jesus title of “Son” with His divinity. The Scriptures clearly expressed the opposite doctrine. Sonship refers to “Christ’s humanity” and doesn’t apply to His deity; for as a member of the divinity Godhead, He has no beginning (Mic. 5:2; John 1:1-2). As God He was NOT BEGOTTEN, otherwise He would have had a beginning as God and was not a Son of God. But AS MAN, Jesus was BEGOTTEN, HAD A BEGINNING and WAS GOD’S SON. Compare with Psalm 2:7, 12; Mat. 1:18-25; Luke 1:35; Heb. 1:5-6. When Jesus was born of Mary, God became a “Father”, and the second member of the Godhead became a “Son”. If the title of “Son” made a reference to Jesus’s deity, then His deity had a beginning on a specific day and He was not a eternal being. These are in contradiction with the Scriptures. So, rather it refers to Jesus’s humanity, which is complete harmony with the Scriptures. Mary was the MOTHER OF Jesus, Not the mother of God. Mat. 1:16. If “Sonship” it is used for both (Deity and humanity), Then, when did He became God? When He was begotten? If as God He was conceived, how could He be eternal? The only way we can settle these questions is when we accept the idea expressed in the Scriptures, that Sonship is related to Jesus’s humanity and not to his deity. God is a Eternal and have no beginning nor end. The Word “Became” Flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:14.

Observe the following passages:

“Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (v. 4) For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? (v. 5) And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him (v. 6).” Heb. 1:4-6

Here is a very easy explanation of these passages:

-Verse 5 expressed: Jesus made much “Better” than the angels. Why? Because of Sonship and Inheritance. Luke 1:35; Jn. 3:16; 5:17-35. Jesus OBTAINED a more EXCELLENT NAME. Compare with Phil. 2:9-11.

-Verse 6 expressed: The fulfillment of a prophecy in the Psalm 2:7, which says;

“Thou art my Son, THIS DAY have I begotten thee?” At what day the prophecy is making reference? At the day when Jesus was born of a virgin. Observe what the book of Luke 2:10-11; “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. FOR UNTO YOU IS BORN THIS DAY in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

-Also in verse 6 expressed: Because Jesus Conquered; “And let all the angels of God WORSHIP HIM.” Only God can be Worship!

Gen. 3:15 was given directly by God as a “preamble” of more details to be express throughout the following years. Every creature involved in the divine statement of Gen. 3:15 knew what God meant by it, but the timing of the fulfillment of such declaration, belong only to God. Satan knew that Gen. 3:15 will end his control over men and his absolute doom of his kingdom. Satan tried to interfere with the fulfillment of Gen. 3:15 by involving “fallen angels” to procreate a race of giants to stop the seed of the woman to be born. This subject is very extensive but explained in the Scriptures, which I can’t fully explain in this study guide because of so many details but I will lay down the basic foundation of this doctrine. First, are the angelical begins asexual (sexless) as many had suggested? There is not statement in the Scriptures of such teachings. Most people used wrongfully the statement of Jesus made in Mat. 22:23-33; Mk. 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-38 to support the idea of “the angelic being are asexual. We will explain the involvement of fallen angels in Gen. 6:4 in a different post.

May our God keep blessing your life!
